George Washington Thornton Beck (1856-1943) came to Wyoming in 1879 and worked as a sheep rancher near Sheridan until 1889. In 1895 in partnership with William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Beck formed the Shoshone Land and Irrigation Company, which undertook construction of the Cody Canal and the town of Cody, Wyoming. Beck, a Democrat, also served in the Wyoming state legislature in 1913 and 1915, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Congress in 1890 and the Wyoming governorship in 1902. H...
